Research Activities

Rolling & Processing

In rolling and processing, products are made by excellent innovative technologies. JFE Steel applies the most advanced process technologies to plants for production, supporting steel manufacturing technology.

Rolling & Processing Technology

The rolling technology used to elongate and shape steel is an indispensable tool for making good qualities in material properties of product. The Rolling & Processing Research Department carries out fundamental research on rolling load/deformation characteristics, etc., and is also involved in developing advanced processes for creating completely new material qualities by combining rolling technology with heat treatment technology

Processing technologies are optimized using FEM and other analytical techniques.

Heating & Cooling Technology

Thermal engineering using brand-new heating and cooling techniques is quite important for manufacturing of high-qualty products.
Reflecting the results of numerical analysis and laboratory tests, JFE Steel develops innovative steel manufacturing equipment, as represented by the Super-OLAC series of on-line accelerated cooling devices, which has the highest cooling performance (700 C/s cooling rate with plate thickness of 3mm)in the world.

Based on a variety of laboratory tests, JFE developed the Super-OLAC devices, which stably realizes the world’s highest cooling rate practical operation.

Surface Treatment Technology

Example of analysis of high speed jet flow
The flow condition of the jet near the steel sheet can be analyzed.

The surface treatment technology is important to make tha steel sheet with excellent corrosion resistance and formability, etc. We are developing the epoch-making surface treatment technologies by using Computational Fluid Dynamics and various kinds of process simulators.
