Powder metallurgy (PM) is a technology for producing materials or products by compacting and sintering a metal powder or a powder containing nonmetal powder blended with a metal powder. The obtained products are called sintered parts. The majority of PM products are used as automobile parts. Because sintered parts are produced by hardening a powder material, they contain pores. The density of the part and mechanical properties such as strength vary depending on the volume of these pores. The main raw material used in these sintered parts are iron powders, which are classified as reduced iron powder, atomized iron powder, or electrolytic iron powder. Iron powders are selected and used as required by the properties of the target sintered part.
Applications of sintered parts
■ Machine parts
medium density; most general type of sintered parts
■ Machine Parts/Bearings and Filters
low-density parts which take advantage of porosity; used in oil-impregnated bearings when lubricating oil can be impregnated in the metal
■ Magnetic Materials
materials utilizing magnetic functions such as high permeability, high initial permeability, soft magnetism, etc.
■ Friction partsc
materials with high friction/wear performance; used in clutches and brakes
