JFE Steel Corporation’s High-Alloy Seamless OCTG “JFE-UHP®-17CR-110”
Selected for Exploratory Well Casing in the Tomakomai CCS Project
JFE Steel Corporation’s high-alloy seamless OCTG, “JFE-UHP®-17CR-110” has been selected for use as casing in the exploratory well (*1) of the Tomakomai CCS project (*2) in Hokkaido, Japan, led by Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX).
The project is commissioned by the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and is one of Japan’s key CCS initiatives focused on long-term CO2 reduction and storage, supporting broader efforts to mitigate climate change.
For this application, “JFE-UHP®-17CR-110” was selected due to its high corrosion resistance and high-strength properties, which are suitable for the severe service conditions expected in CO2 injection and storage environments. In addition, the well will utilise the “JFELION®” premium connection, providing the high gas-tight performance required for CCS service.
JFE’s high-alloy OCTG and premium connections have already been applied in several overseas CCS wells, and this operational track record was a contributing factor in the material and connection selection for the Tomakomai project.
JFE Steel will continue to support decarbonisation efforts through the development and supply of high-performance OCTG materials and premium connections suited for CCS and other low-carbon energy applications.
*1 Well: A borehole drilled for the purpose of geological surveying, resource extracting, or CO2 injection/storage.
*2 In February 2025, the offshore area near Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, was designated as a “Specified Area” under Japan’s Act on Carbon Dioxide Storage Business (CCS Business Act).
