JFE Steel Corporation

JGreeX
First Transformers Made with JGreeX Green Steel to be Produced in Europe

JFE Steel Corporation today announced that its JGreeX green steel, a grain-oriented electrical steel, has been selected for inaugural use in transformers that will be manufactured in Europe. This will also be the first order for JGreeX outside of Japan as well as its first use in electrical steel sheets.

JFE Steel uses the mass-balance approach to allocate emission reductions to specific JGreeX green-steel products. In accordance with Japan Iron and Steel Federation guidelines, JFE Steel allocates the environmental value of CO2 emission reductions achieved across an entire manufacturing process to specific steel products, which are then considered to have low CO2 emission intensity.

Electrical steel sheet, which contains additives such as silicon and aluminum, offers excellent magnetic properties including high magnetic flux density and low iron loss. Non-oriented electrical steel, which achieves excellent magnetic properties that are nearly uniform in all directions, is used in the iron cores of motors. Grain-oriented electrical steel, which exhibits superior magnetic properties in a single (rolling) direction, is used in the iron cores of power and distribution transformers.

As the production of high-efficiency transformers, which help to reduce CO2 emissions, increases to meet growing global demand for electricity and renewable energy, the demand for grain-oriented electrical steel used in these transformers is also expected to grow.

Going forward, JFE Steel expects to meet this demand by producing world-class, high-quality grain-oriented electrical steel as well as JGreeX products that contribute to global decarbonization.
