JFE Steel to Begin Supplying JGreeX™ Green Steel in Current Fiscal Year
JFE Steel Corporation announced today that it will supply a variety of green-steel products under the JGreeX™ brand, which will be produced with highly advanced steelmaking processes that produce significantly less CO2 emissions than conventional products, beginning in the current 2023 fiscal year that began in April. JGreeX™ annual supply capacity is expected to reach 200,000 tons per year in the first year, which assumes zero CO2 emissions although actual emissions associated with specific steel products may vary.
JFE Steel will use the mass balance approach to determine the level of CO2 emissions reduction for each JGreeX™ product. Under this approach, the environmental values of CO2 emissions reductions across entire manufacturing processes will be aggregated to specific products considered to have low CO2 emissions intensity. In principle, JFE Steel considers virtually all of its steel products to be potential candidates for inclusion in the company’s JGreeX™ lineup.
The independent organization ClassNK is expected to perform third-party certifications of JGreeX™ products to confirm their respective CO2 emissions-reduction levels.
JFE, which has made climate-change mitigation one of its top priorities, has introduced its JFE Group Environmental Vision for 2050 with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 in order to increase its enterprise value through stable, sustainable growth. JFE Steel views the remaining time until 2030 as a transitional period during which it will strive to reduce CO2 emissions and the carbon footprint of its steelmaking processes through measures such as expanding its application of existing low-carbon technologies and processes, pursuing energy savings and higher efficiency, and increasing the amounts and types of low-carbon raw materials and fuels used in its business.
Going forward, JFE Steel aims to contribute to the decarbonization of society by accelerating CO2 emissions reduction across its entire supply chain, including by expanding its capacity to deliver stable supplies of JGreeX™ green-steel products.
