JFE Steel Corporation

JFE Steel’s JGreeX Green Steel Selected by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding
for Construction of Hydrogen-fueled Tugboats

—JFE Steel to start supplying from September 2023—

JFE Steel Corporation announced today that its JGreeX green steel products have been selected by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for the construction of tugboats fitted with hydrogen co-combustion engines. JFE Steel will start supplying JGreeX products to Tsuneishi this September.

For JGreeX green steel products, which significantly reduce CO2 emissions in steelmaking, JFE Steel uses the mass balance approach to allocate emission reductions to specific steel products. In accordance with Japan Iron and Steel Federation guidelines, JFE Steel allocates the environmental values of CO2 emission reductions across an entire manufacturing process to specific steel products, which are then considered to have low CO2 emission intensity.

JFE Steel’s parent, JFE, has made climate-change mitigation one of its top priorities, including by introducing the JFE Group Environmental Vision for 2050 with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 in order to increase its enterprise value through stable, sustainable growth. JFE Steel views the remaining time until 2030 as a transitional period. During this time, the company will strive to reduce CO2 emissions and the carbon footprint of its steelmaking processes through measures such as expanding its application of existing low-carbon technologies and processes, pursuing energy savings and higher efficiency, and increasing the amounts and types of low-carbon raw materials and fuels used in its business.

Going forward, in addition to expanding sales of JGreeX, JFE Steel expects to continue contributing to decarbonization by further reducing CO2 emissions through the use of advanced low-carbon technologies as well as energy-saving and high-efficiency technologies.
