Applications of Iron Powder

Powder Metallurgy

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a technology for producing materials or products by compacting and sintering a metal powder or a powder containing nonmetal powder blended with a metal powder. The obtained products are called sintered parts. The majority of PM products are used as automobile parts. Because sintered parts are produced by hardening a powder material, they contain pores. The density of the part and mechanical properties such as strength vary depending on the volume of these pores.

The main raw material used in these sintered parts are iron powders, which are classified as reduced iron powder, atomized iron powder, or electrolytic iron powder. Iron powders are selected and used as required by the properties of the target sintered part.

Applications of sintered parts

Bearings and filter parts
(low-density parts which take advantage of porosity; used in oil-impregnated bearings when lubricating oil can be impregnated in the metal)

Machine parts
(medium density; most general type of sintered parts)

High strength/wear-resistant parts
(high strength materials and materials with excellent wear resistance by high strength/high hardness)

Magnetic Materials
(materials utilizing magnetic functions such as high permeability, high initial permeability, soft magnetism, etc.)

Friction parts
(materials with high friction/wear performance; used in clutches and brakes)

Non-PM applications

Body warmers
(products which produce warmth using the oxidation heat generation reaction of iron)

Deoxidizers
(materials used to preserve the freshness of foods, which reduce oxygen in closed containers by oxidation of iron)

Chemical reactants
(used in oxidation/reduction reaction of iron; also used to remove harmful substances in soil)

Welding rod coating materials
(used to improve deposition efficiency in welding by adding iron power to the welding rod coating material)

Gas cutting materials
(used to improve gas cutting of steel materials utilizing the oxidation heat of iron powder)
