Expert System for Coal Blend Design

Eiji Nakata, Kiyomi Terazono, Hideo Fujimoto
Synopsis :
Kawasaki Steel Corp. and Kawasaki Steel Systems R&D Corp. have developed an expert system that automatically designs a coal blending plan for cokemaking. This system first identifies a probable qualitative trend of coal in storage over a certain period, and then produces a detailed blending plan to suit this qualitative trend by adjusting blending ratio to achieve desired quality index. This process involves a depth-first search, following the expertiese and restrictions of engineers when determining priority in expanding search trees, or cutting developed trees, whichever it may be. In the past, it took two days for an export to design a two-month coal blending plan. The expert system takes only two hours to output a three-month blending plan that is as good as that by a human expert, so that blending can be simulated for various coke quality targets and coal arrival schedules. This newly developed expert system has been managing coal blending and coke quality control without expert assistance at Mizushima Works since May 1989.
