Synopsis :
Manufacture of external polyethylene (hereinafter called "PE") coated large diameter pipe was started in April, 1979 in the UOE pipe mill plant of Chiba Works. The main feature of the PE coating is its corrosion prevention of the steel pipe by extruded PE film that spirally wraps around the outer surface of the pipe. The PE coating machine is of the T-die extrusion type, and is one of the largest of its kind in the world in terms of production capacity and product size available, with a pipe diameter of 20 in. to 64 in. and a maximum pipe length of 60 ft. The main facilities consist of the blasting unit before coating, PE film coating unit, coated pipe-end cutting and beveling unit, and many inspection devices for complete quality assurance. This paper discusses the results of studies on the best possible combination of coating materials and coating conditions which brought about improvement in various properties of coating, such as quality, ambient temperature range (-45‹ to +80Ž: after improvement) applicable to pipe, adhesive strength, and toughness against damage to the surface during transportation and handling.
